A MAJOR road in York is closed after a crash.

There's been a crash close to the Hop Grove roundabout in York on the outer ring road and the A1036 Malton Road is now closed. There are reports of five police vehicles on the scene and the air ambulance has landed close to the Toby Carvery pub.

A car transporter has over turned off the road in a ditch and the driver was airlifted to hospital where he remains in a serious condition.

Drivers are being asked to avoid the area.

A spokeswoman for the Yorkshire Air Amblance siad: "I can confirm Yorkshire Air Ambulance attended the accident this morning in Malton Road.

"Our team arrived at the scene at 8.36am in our G-YORX helicopter flying from our Nostell Air Support Unit.

"The patient was flown to Leeds General Infirmary after receiving treatment at the scene."

A spokeswoman for North Yorkshire Police said the road remained closed at 6pm and investigations are still ongoing.

She said: "We’re appealing for witnesses and dashcam footage following a serious collision on the A1036 Malton Road on the outskirts of York.

"The incident happened at 8.10am this morning and involved a vehicle transporter leaving the road and colliding with a tree.

"The driver of the vehicle received serious injuries and was airlifted to hospital where he remains in a serious condition.

"The road is currently closed in both directions from the Toby Carvery (Hopgrove Lane South) to the A1237 roundabout. It is likely to remain closed for a few hours whilst a complex recovery takes place.
