Now, the votes have been counted and we can reveal that the winner is… The Lord Nelson in Nether Poppleton!
The Poppleton pub is one of two owned by 26 year old Tom Brown, one of the youngest landlords in York, who says he prides himself on his ability to create busy, welcoming, community pubs and his family orientated approach that keeps locals coming back.
The Lord Nelson focuses on local ales and a regularly booked out ‘Yorkshire Tapas’ menu – that features dishes such as Tatties Bravas, Whitby Crab Croquettes, and Landlord Beef Brisket and Yorkshire Puddings – in addition to a pizza kitchen in the beer garden and Sunday dinners.
The pub also hosts regular live music evenings, a popular pub quiz every Tuesday, and a yearly 'Big Beer Garden Bash' where the pub hosts more than 300 people for beer, food, and live music.
On winning the title of Best Pub 2024, proud Yorkshireman and landlord Tom Brown found himself temporarily lost for words, before saying: “I can’t believe it. The locals round here are going to be absolutely over the moon. Lots of them were going down to the newsagent and picking up extra copies of the paper, letting us know they were voting.
“Despite that, I really didn’t expect it - there was lots of big hitting city centre pubs in the competition and we’re just on the outskirts. Some of these pubs are so well respected, so I’m dead chuffed to have won.”
“It’s a real testament to the team down here, these guys have done an amazing job and built up the community. They’ve smashed it.”
Tom continued: “We’ve got a very local customer base, especially because the pub was near enough abandoned only four years ago. The work we’ve put in proves that these pubs that are scheduled for demolition can be saved and they can thrive.”
On plans to celebrate, Tom said that he would make sure that the team could get some celebratory drinks in and that he planned to inform general manager Pete, who was away at a festival, to give him the chance to celebrate there too.
