COUNCIL bosses have confirmed that roadworks which would have seen a village street closed for a week HAVE been delayed.

As reported in The Press, villagers in Wheldrake were mystified this morning when planned roadworks which would have seen Main Street closed from 9.30am until 3pm every day for six days did not begin on time.

They then spotted that a notice had appeared on the Causeway one.network suggesting the start of the closure had, at the last minute, been postponed from today, August 8, until August 15.

They said there had been no notification of this from City of York Council, which had ordered the closure to allow ‘heavy patching’ of the street.

The council has now confirmed to The Press that yes, the road closure HAS been delayed – although the authority gave no explanation as to why.

A council spokesperson said: “The works on Main Street, Wheldrake, have been delayed with a new start date of August 15, to be completed on August 19.”

The spokesperson confirmed that there would be no weekend working – and that on days when the road was closed, it would only be between 9.30am and 3pm.

The council spokesperson said new letters had been sent out to local residents and businesses confirming the arrangements.

Those informed included bus companies, the spokesperson confirmed.

Villagers in both Wheldrake and nearby Thorganby had been left angry at the idea that people without cars would have no access to bus services during the closures.

Bus companies had warned that both the East Yorkshire No 18 bus service and York Pullman’s My36 service would be unable to serve Wheldrake during the hours when the road was closed – and the No 18 would also not be able to serve Thorganby.

Quizzed about whether the bus services would be reinstated now that the roadworks had been delayed, the council spokesperson said: “Bus operators have been made aware – timetabling will be up to them.”
