A FOOT crossing over four railway lines in York is closing whilst tracks are upgraded.

City of York Council issued temporary traffic restrictions for Copmanthorpe Foot Crossing No.2 from 6.01am on Friday, August 9 until 6am on Monday, March 24 2025.

The council said during this period the crossing, over which a public footpath joins Copmanthorpe to Bishopthorpe, would be closed 13 times on Sundays.

Network Rail, which manages the UK’s rail infrastructure, said the Transpennine Route Upgrade scheme to improve connections between York and Manchester is replacing two of the four lines in the area.

A spokesperson for Network Rail said: “In order for these improvements to be carried out, Copmanthorpe level crossing will be closed on Sundays while our work takes place.

“This is for reasons of public safety, as the two East Coast Main Line tracks remain open to train services and the presence of large stationary engineering trains in the area may affect the crossing warning lights, obscure the view of the line for people wanting to cross the railway, and any noise from our work may make it harder to hear approaching trains.

“Work to complete these improvements may also require a small number of longer midweek closures when the crossing surface will be temporarily removed and replaced, which will be notified in advance.”

City of York Council said traffic signs and barriers will indicate when the crossing is closed.
