A MAIN road through York city centre is closing for traffic while a crane is removed.

City of York Council issued a temporary traffic restriction for Micklegate for between 6.30am on Monday, August 19 and 7pm on Wednesday, August 28.

The road will be closed between Micklegate’s junctions with Priory Street and Bar Lane for the removal of a crane, which has been involved in hotel construction works there.

The council said it is envisaged that the crane removal works will only take place between Monday, August 19 and Tuesday, August 20 but said there may be a postponement due to adverse weather.

If that happens, the crane is expected to be removed between Tuesday, August 27 and Wednesday, August 28 instead.

The council said alternative routes for diverted vehicles will be signed during the works period via Toft Green, George Hudson Street, Rougier Street, Station Road, Queen Street, Nunnery Lane, Bishopgate Street, Tower Street, Clifford Street, and Low Ousegate.

Part of these diversions are because traffic can’t turn right from George Hudson Street back into Micklegate, so an alternative route is required via Nunnery Lane.

There will be local access through Mickelgate Bar.
