York students have been praised for achieving some of the best A-level results their school has ever seen.
Celebrations were in order for many youngsters at Fulford School this morning (Thursday, August 15) after collecting their grades.
Seventy-five per cent of all results were A* to B grades, with 50 per cent of students achieving A* or A in A-levels or distinction in vocational courses.
Over 60 per cent of students achieved an A* or A grade in maths, biology, chemistry and physics.
Eight secured places at Oxbridge and five will study medicine.
Head teacher Russell Harris praised the students for their hard work.
"We talk about being the change we wish to see in the world,” he told The Press. “It sums it up when you see the ambition here… we can’t be prouder of them.”
He added: “It’s such a good day, but it’s such a sad day because they leave the school and move on.”
Mr Harris was appointed head at the start of the year and has been working at the school for the past five years.
“I’ve seen [the students] grow and I’ve seen the journey they’ve taken through the school,” he said.
Mr Harris explained that the youngsters “bounced back amazingly” after the disruption to their education during the pandemic.
“I wish all the young people within our Fulford School, the authority area and the country the very best in their journeys,” he said. “I know they’re going onto amazing things, and we wish them all well for that.”
'I’m buzzing,' says student after collecting grade
Fulford School students caught up with The Press after collecting their results.
Tilly Andrew secured a place at the University of Oxford to study psychology after achieving three A* and an A.
"I wasn’t expecting it,” the 18-year-old from Bishopthorpe said. “The fact I’ve come out with that is mental.”
"I feel relieved and proud,” added mum Justine.
Francesca Kent will join her at the University of Oxford after achieving four A* grades.
The 18-year-old, who lives near Wheldrake, will study history and English.
“We’ve all had two difficult years,” she said. “It was good to have that and it all be worth it.”
Alex Poole achieved three C’s and secured a place to study at Northumbria University to study economics.
"My grades aren’t the best but I’m very happy I got what I needed,” the 18-year-old, from Fulford, said.
Alex explained that he is “really interested” in economics as his mum is a business owner and his brother also studied the subject.
"It’s how the world works,” he added. “And also, there’s a lot of money in it.”
Ethan Slight jumped with joy after achieving an double distinction and B which got him into Sheffield Hallam University to study criminology.
“I’m buzzing that I got the results,” the 18-year-old, from Escrick, said.
Ethan explained that he wants to join the police force and feels studying criminology will help him pursue that career.
“I want to help society,” he said.
