A BUSY road in York city centre is set to close to traffic over a weekend.

Walmgate, which serves as a busy bus route between the city and the University of York, will be closed to traffic on Saturday, August 31 and Sunday, September 1.

The closures are set to take place on August 31 from 9am to 2.30pm and on September 1 between 9am and 4pm.

According to City of York Council, the closure is for two reasons – firstly, for the highways maintenance team to undertake maintenance and repair works on the road surface and then on September 1 for Yorkshire Water to undertake its own repairs.

This includes repairing or replacing some manhole covers that are in the middle of the road, requiring the road closure.

In the past, repairs have been necessary on the street following a burst pipe.

According to a spokesperson from the council: “We’ve coordinated the two separate works to try and minimise the disruption to residents, visitors and the bus services. A diversion will be in place for both closures."
