Reading Helen Mead’s article ‘Let’s give kids a day at the seaside’ (The Press, August 17) was a trip down memory lane for me.
As kids in the late 1950s early 60s we used to go on bus trips from Poppleton to the coast to Scarborough or Bridlington and occasionally Butlins at Filey. We were only told just before the trip so we didn’t get ‘over excited’.
After queuing through York (no bypass then) and a stopover at Malton for breakfast (again no bypass) it was on to the coast. The bus was full of songs and light-hearted banter and excitement.
After a day on the beach and the return journey - with a stopover at Malton again for tea - we returned home to Poppleton with a bus full of tired but happy and contented kids, and with many excited stories to pass on.
Like Helen, we went to Bridlington every year on holidays for years and years.
Life was different then and in some ways a lot less complicated.
