A VILLAGE in East Yorkshire is set to welcome the gathering of a national rally.
The National Association of Veteran Cycle Clubs annual rally takes place from August 30 to September 1 in Pollington, near Selby.
The 67th annual meeting of the National Association of Veteran Cycle Clubs sees members showing and endeavouring to ride bicycles dating from the 1860s to 1935.
This period incorporates ‘boneshakers’ and penny farthings.
Graham Reed, 73, will be attending his 51st national rally, based at the Kings Head Inn in Main Street.
Along with wife Jackie, the residents of the nearby village of Balne have a collection of around 120 machines, along with lamps, ephemera and clothing covering a century of cycling including the Victorian and Edwardian periods.
Graham said: “My interest began as a fourteen-year-old, when I was gifted a Rudge-Whitworth by my aunty.
“It’s still in the collection – I remember finding out about the manufacturer and I had it dated to 1924 from the frame number.”
Two rides are planned at the national rally – one up to 15 miles and one between 20 and 25 miles.
National Association of Veteran Cycle Clubs members also look to wear the correct period costume appropriate to the era of the cycle they are riding.
