Part of the York City Walls will close for conservation work.

The section of the ancient walls between Fishergate Bar and the Fishergate Postern will be closed from Monday, September 2, to Friday, September 6.

City of York Council said access gates will be locked and signs will be in place showing people where they can rejoin the walkway.

The closure follows the reopening of the section of the walls between Station Rise and Micklegate Bar last month, after a two-month closure.

At the time, the council said the closure was in place due to the ongoing work to demolish Queen Street Bridge below, as part of the Station Gateway development.

The bridge – built in 1877 to go over railway tracks that are no longer there – is being demolished to “improve the setting of the city walls and free up the space needed to transform the area to the front of the railway station”, the council said previously.
