A fast-growing chicken restaurant chain is set to add spice to one of York’s busiest streets when it opens next week.
Pepe’s Piri Piri will be offering its famous fresh, flame grilled chicken to both take-away and dine-in customers from 11am on Monday (Sep 2).
The restaurant, based in the former Argos catalogue store, promises an extensive line-up including Pepe’s signature flame grilled wings, strips, burgers, a vegetarian collection and the store’s now somewhat ‘instafamous’ Chick’n’Rice box, which has attracted millions of views on social media platforms such as Instagram and TikTok.
In addition to chicken, the popular chain also offers gourmet lamb and beef burgers, plus a vegetarian range.

The menu is completed by a range of family platters, kids’ meals, sides and desserts.
Pepe’s Piri Piri Head of Franchising, Matt Hart said: “It’s hard to believe that it was just back in 2007 that we opened the first Pepe’s Piri Piri in Watford and this store in York puts us over 200 stores across the UK.”
The nearest Pepe’s to York is currently at Knaresborough Road, Harrogate, but in Yorkshire there are also Pepe’s in Leeds, Batley, Doncaster, Bradford, Hull, Keighley, Huddersfield and Sheffield.
The popular Piccadilly venue is also home to GDK (German Doner Kebab), which opened a few doors away at 15 Piccadilly in March 2022.
Piri Piri chicken, which is said to have come from Mozambique in Africa and brought to Europe by Portugueuse explorers, has become increasingly popular in recent years.
York's other Piri Piri restaurants include Nandos both on High Ousegate and at the Vangarde Shopping Centre.
Rico's Peri Peri will also open a take-away shortly on Blossom Street.
Matt continued: “We’re proud to be able to offer exciting franchising opportunities that can turn someone’s dream of owning and running their own business into a reality, and we’re looking forward to the success that we know Pepe’s York will be.
“Of course, we’re also delighted to bring our delicious fresh cooking methods and range of tasty flavours to the people of York who are in for a real treat.”
York store owner Usman Cheema said: “We are thrilled to be bringing Pepe’s to the York area; the team are excited to fire up the grills and get cooking in this local community which we’ll be proud to serve for what we’re sure will be many years to come.”
The York store will open with an opening offer of 20% off (collection only) for the first three days.
