A major luxury hotel has been proposed for the centre of York.

The Evans Property Group in partnership with Dakota Hotels has launched a public consultation on proposals for a 140-bed hotel at the Northern House site on Rougier Street.

The proposals would result in demolition of the existing Northern House site with a replacement building of similar height featuring a new family-focused hotel, that would create around 125 new jobs.

The development would also enhance Rougier Street by adding to improvements that this part of York City Centre has seen over recent years.

It also follows the abandonment of the massive Roman Quarter project earlier this year and the opening of the Hooting Owl distillery at Easter in Rougier Street.

The Dakota Hotel would include around 140 rooms, a bar, dining areas, and top floor terraces. Dual access would be provided from Rougier Street and Tanner’s Moat with both entrances designed to be fully accessible to all.

The hotel includes Dakota’s trademark design and responds to the architectural identity of York, with the building height comparable to the existing Northern House.

Sustainable building techniques are proposed, and energy capture will be supported through air source heat pumps and solar panels.

The developers say around 125 jobs would be created in the running of the hotel, with a range of full and part time positions across hospitality, restaurant and management.

Dakota Hotels run graduate training programmes and provide apprenticeships and internships to spread opportunity.

This approach has seen Dakota Hotels recognised as a Sunday Times ‘Top 10 Best Places To Work’ and won the ‘Best Places to Work for LGBTQIA+ Employees’ accolade this year.  The company will also look to provide apprenticeships in building trades during construction.

Evans Property Group and Dakota Hotels have partnered on successful hotel projects in Leeds, Manchester, Edinburgh and Glasgow and now supports over 630 employees.

A drop-in public exhibition will take place at Explore Library, Museum Street (Marriott Room) on Tuesday September 10 from 4pm to 7pm.

Project team members will be on-hand to discuss the proposals and capture feedback.

A website has also been launched at: www.dakotahotelyork-consultation.co.uk. The website will open fully with a feedback form on Tuesday September 10.

Marc Banks from Evans Property Group said: “This public consultation provides a great opportunity to influence these exciting plans. We aim to transform this underutilised city centre location and contribute to the wider regeneration efforts around Rougier Street”.

Andrew Ovenstone from Dakota Hotels said: “York has been a key target location for Dakota Hotels for some time due to its international reputation and burgeoning family-focused offer.

“A Dakota Hotel would complement the existing offer and help to meet the growing demand for overnight stays and week-long trips to enjoy York and wider North Yorkshire”.

The developer is working towards a planning submission which will be lodged following the consultation process.
