A York-based rail firm has announced increased services for a major upcoming event.

Ahead of the Great North Run on Sunday, September 9, LNER has announced that it will be running an additional five trains for attendees.

The company said that the extra services will provide "thousands more seats" for runners and spectators heading to the half marathon.

The new services will call at York at 7.23am, and arrive at Newcastle at 8.23am. Another will arrive in York at 7.55am, and reach Newcastle at 8.48am.

The three additional trains - not calling at York - will arrive in Newcastle at 7.58am, 8.31am and 8.48am respectively.

David Flesher, commercial director at LNER, said: "Many thousands of people will be making their way to Newcastle for the Great North Run.

"Our services will bring people into the heart of the city, and we are delighted to be supporting those taking part and those cheering them on.

"We encourage customers to plan and book ahead and reserve a seat as trains are likely to be very popular."
