A YORK school celebrating a milestone anniversary has won a special award.
St Paul’s CE Primary School won a York Community Pride Award, sponsored by Drive Taxis, in the category of School of the Year.
Included among the many testimonials from nominations for the 150-year-old school in St Paul’s Terrace, Holgate, were the ‘tireless’ efforts of staff in granting 150 ‘wishes’ to pupils to mark the special anniversary.
These have included events ranging from meeting a 'real-life unicorn', dressing as a knight to walk the City Walls, meeting a princess, meeting an elephant and taking an 'expedition' with a real-life explorer.
Headteacher Christie Clarke was joined by staff on stage at York Racecourse to collect the award.
Mrs Clarke said: "We've actually granted every single wish now, so we're really pleased.
"It's been a whole community and a whole school effort, we've done it as a team and hopefully we've inspired all the children in our school to believe that anything they set their mind to is possible.
"We've had so much from the community, when they heard about what we were doing in school, they've donated, they've helped - from parents to companies."
Many of these ‘wishes’ involved businesses and were completed in tandem with heritage events such as a Victorian-dress-up day to commemorate the historical roots of the school, plus guest visits from former pupils.
Supporters said the school ‘always strives to be in the heart of the community’ and is a ‘truly amazing place and the staff ‘care so about each of the children individually.’
