A two-day Classic Car Show to help a York charity attracted over 1000 visitors and was the most successful event in its ten-year history.

More than 370 classic vehicle owners helped Weighton Wolds Rotary Club's annual Classic Car Show raise £5,665 for York Against Cancer.

The popular event took place over the Bank Holiday weekend at Langlands Garden Centre, Shiptonthorpe.

Classic car enthusiast and Weighton Wolds Rotary Club member, John Ducker said: "On Sunday, there were 116 classic and vintage cars, 35 motorbikes and 10 tractors, then on Monday, we had 220 classic and vintage cars, 50 plus motor bikes and 10 tractors.

“This is the biggest number of vehicles that we have had over the two days, the most visitors we have ever had, and a record-breaking amount of money raised for York Against Cancer.”

John continued: “We're very pleased with how the show went and would like to thank everyone who contributed to its success - from the car owners themselves, to Drakes for sponsoring the cups, Langlands for sponsoring the prize draw and providing the venue and Rotary Club Members whose help was also much appreciated. Without their support, the event would not take place. We look forward to organising the event again next year."

Heather Atkinson, deputy CEO and head of finance at York Against Cancer said: "Thanks so much to the team at Weighton Wolds Rotary Club for their continued support of York Against Cancer and for choosing us once again to benefit from the proceeds of their annual classic car show and for organizing such a great event. There was a fabulous atmosphere with lots of people and an amazing number of cars."

Two cups were awarded at the show: The Ian Peak Memorial Cup for the best pre-war car was won by Denis Dunston with his 1925 Bullnose Morris and the Weighton Wolds Presidents Cup for the car the President would most like to take home was won by Mike Kendall with his 1928 Rolls Royce Phantom. Both prizes were sponsored by Drakes Garage Shiptonthorpe.

The Classic Car Show takes the amount raised by the chartered Rotary Club to over £116,000 since it started in 2014. The club raises funds for both specific charities and for the Club's own charity account from which local bequests are made.
