TRAFFIC bosses have blamed congestion for major problems on roads heading into York city centre.
The queues on the A64's eastbound carriageway stretched at one stage from the roadworks at the River Ouse crossing to Bilbrough with stationary traffic on both lanes and motorists reporting lengthy delays.
One lane of the York Outer Ring Road eastbound is closed for safety reasons over the River Ouse between the Askham Bar and Fulford interchanges.
The tailback on the A64 to the roadworks currently stretches to the Copmanthorpe interchange and the junction with the A1237 northern outer ring road.
Highways Agency, which administers the A64 said the delays were caused by congestion. No major crash has been reported.
Inside the Outer Ring Road, motorists are experiencing long queues on Tadcaster Road, Boroughbridge Road and Bishopthorpe Road heading into York city centre as travellers try to find a way round the Outer Ring Road delays.
There is no single major event in York today that could explain the congestion and the races are not on until tomorrow.
