A prep school has welcomed girls for the first time in its nearly 150-year history.

Last Thursday saw 34 girls join Aysgarth Prep School, in Newton-le-Willows near Bedale, marking a significant shift towards co-education for years 4 to 8.

The decision follows more than 30 years of co-education in the pre-prep school, and reflects the school's commitment to providing opportunities for both boys and girls.

The addition of the girls brings the total number of pupils at the school to 152.

Aysgarth Prep School says there is "a palpable sense of excitement" among staff, and that they are "eager to teach, support, and guide" students through the "significant moment" in the school's history.

The school has a 50:50 male-to-female staff ratio and a 1:5 staff-to-pupil ratio.

Headmaster Jonathan Anderson said: "While this is a change, the essence of what makes Aysgarth special remains the same – academic excellence, strong community, rich traditions, and boundless opportunities.

"Some girls have already joined the Chapel choir, all are proudly wearing their uniforms, and they’re fully embracing everything the school has to offer."

Some of the parents of the new girls also shared how they were getting on.

One parent said: "She looks well and happy and I can’t thank you enough for providing this positive start."

Another said: "[X] was full of beans and very happy when I left - the girls will have a great time."

The school says this move towards co-education will not affect Aysgarth’s core principles and ethos.
