An 81-year-old driver has appeared before York Magistrates' Court accused of causing serious injury to a pedestrian by dangerous driving.

Harold Edward Taylor, of Tockwith Road, Long Marston, is alleged to have collided with a woman as she crossed Beaconsfield Street, Acomb, on June 4.

She is alleged to have suffered potentially life-changing injuries.

Taylor appeared via video link before three magistrates this afternoon.

He confirmed his name, date of birth and address before indicating he will deny the charge of causing serious injury by dangerous driving of a Honda Jazz car.

After hearing from lawyers for the prosecution and the defence, the magistrates decided the case was too serious for them to hear and sent him to York Crown Court to be tried by a judge and jury.

Taylor was released on unconditional bail.

His next court appearance will be before a judge for a plea and trial preparation hearing on October 7 when he will be expected to enter his plea.
