Recent cases at York Magistrates Court included a man who made life difficult for his near neighbours, a thief and a sex offender trying to contact a child online. 

James Johnson, 74, of Chapelfields Road, Acomb, was jailed for 18 weeks after he was convicted at trial of stealing car parts from a near neighbour, criminal damage by dumping bags of dog faeces and rubbish in their garden, criminal damage to a manhole cover, and failure to attend court.  He had denied all charges.

Damion Riley, 30, of Charles Avenue, Cross Green, Leeds, pleaded guilty to stealing a £5,800 bicycle from the Bike Hire Store in Dalby Forest near Pickering. He was given a 12-month community order with 100 hours’ unpaid work and ordered to pay £200 prosecution costs and a £114 statutory surcharge.

Graham Hoare, 64, of Manor Court, Barlby, pleaded guilty to attempting to engage in sexual communication with a child and three charges of having indecent images of children.  He was given an 18-month community order with 35 days’ rehabilitative activities and 150 hours’ unpaid work and must register as a sex offender for five years.  He must pay £85 prosecution costs and a £114 statutory surcharge.
