York and North Yorkshire motorists have been ordered to pay hundreds of pounds each in fines and other court costs after they failed to respond to court summons. 

All were convicted in their absence.

Thomas Mortimer, 57, of Peppermint Way, Selby, was convicted at Harrogate Magistrates Court of failure to tell police who was driving his car when it was allegedly committing a traffic offence.  He was given six penalty points and ordered to pay a £215 fine, a £86 statutory surcharge and £90 prosecution costs.

Myles Greaves, 20, of Regent Street, central York, was convicted at Kirklees Magistrates Court of not paying his car tax.  He was fined £220 and ordered to pay £100 costs and £45 car tax.

John Rhys Sandey, 26, of Highfield Road, Bubwith, Selby, was convicted at Boston Magistrates court of failure to tell police who was driving his car when it was allegedly speeding at 58 mph in a 30 mph zone in Lincoln. He was fined £660, ordered to pay a £264 statutory surcharge and £110 prosecution costs and given six penalty points.

Two drivers were sentenced at Sheffield Magistrates Court.

Petru Sumanariu, 41, of Wigginton Road, Wigginton, was convicted of failure to tell police who was driving his car when it allegedly committed a motoring offence.  He was fined £660, ordered to pay a £264 statutory surcharge and £110 prosecution costs and given six penalty points.

Beth-Dempsey Lawrence, 28, of Far Moss, Selby, was convicted of speeding at 85 mph on the M1 near Sheffield.  He was fined £220 and ordered to pay a £88 statutory surcharge and £90 prosecution costs and given three penalty points.
