THIRTEEN York pubs are included in a nationwide guide that lists 4,500 of the best pubs in Britain.

The Campaign for Real Ale’s (CAMRA) Good Beer Guide – the UK’s best-selling beer and pub guide – has just produced its 52nd edition.

It has not one but two covers featuring two of the UK’s favourite locals: Coronation Street’s Rovers Return Inn, and Emmerdale’s Woolpack.

The Guide promises to be the definitive beer drinkers guide for those seeking the best pints in Britain’s pubs.

It is based on feedback from CAMRA members and nominations from CAMRA branches.

CAMRA Chairman Ash Corbett-Collins said: “The Rovers Return Inn and the Woolpack represent the UK’s love of their local, and to have them featured on the covers for this year’s Guide is very exciting.

“CAMRA’s mission is to ensure support from the Government as well as tangible legislation to protect pubs across each nation of the UK. By next year’s edition of the Guide, we want to be talking about the beer and pub trade growing with the support of communities and parliament alike.”

The Guide lists scores of pubs across North Yorkshire and 13 in York. Breweries are also listed.

The listed York pubs are The Ackhorne, Blue Bell,Brew York Beer Hall and Tap Room,  Fox, Golden Ball, Maltings, Market Cat, Phoenix Inn, Rook and Raskell, Slip Inn, Waggon and Horses and the York Tap.

York Camra has around 1100 members and around 450 pubs in its branch area.

Chairman Chris Tregellis told the Press: “We are pleased to see the publication of our national Good Beer Guide which includes so many smashing York area pubs. But not enough!

“Many more excellent establishments would waltz into the pages of other cities and I always feel sorry for those that don't make the cut.

“York branch is strictly limited as to its number of entries and this is to ensure even coverage nationally.

“Many more pubs do, however, appear in our very popular Whatpub.com online guide.”

Chris added: “So to those real ale pubs not in this year: please keep up the good work as we appreciate you all.”

In addition to helping compile the guide, York CAMRA also announces its own town and country pubs of the year, social clubs of the year and cider pubs of the year, along with pubs of the season. Many of these winners will also feature in the Guide.

As previously reported, The Swan on Bishopthorpe Road was the York Camra 2024 pub of the year.

When this was announced, Chris said: “The Swan has been known for its range and quality of ales, friendly demeanor and pub atmosphere as well as being a building of architectural interest. “
