A driver has appeared before York Magistrates' Court accused of causing the death of an elderly man in a North Yorkshire village.

Hamish Hickey, 40, of St Hilda’s Walk, Ampleforth, was arrested following an incident near his home on July 26, 2022.

He is charged with causing the death of Michael Lupton by driving a Volvo car dangerously in Thorpe Lane, Ampleforth.

The charge can only be tried by a judge and jury, so the case was sent to York Crown Court where Hickey will appear for a plea and trial preparation hearing on October 21.

He will then be asked to enter his plea. Hickey was released on bail.
