Richmond
This market town is said to be one of Britain’s “most beautiful”, according to travel website Holiday at Home.
“Its 11th-century castle, fine historic buildings, large cobbled market place and many hidden corners make it a treasure trove for visitors.
“You’ll find a good choice of pubs and plenty of places to eat, as well as shops to stock up on essentials and gift,” it adds.
For those who love a stroll, Richmond Castle is an ideal place to wander around as you take in the riverside views.
The Drummer Boy Walk is another route for walkers that offers “spectacular views” of the River Swale, the Batts and the castle.
The outdoor market is held every Saturday and Wednesday in Richmond Market Place.
Additionally, the indoor market trades Monday to Saturday 9am – 3.30pm and Sunday 10am - 3.30pm in the Market Hall.
Helmsley
Helmsley is known for its cobbled streets, boutique shops and choice of cafes, bars and restaurants, not to mention its market which takes place every Friday.
Gorgeous Cottages says: “Amongst the country pubs, independent shops and tearooms that are dotted around the market square you’ll also find a micro-brewery and a top-class spa.”
Thirsk
Did you know Thirsk has “much-loved” attractions and is ideal for exploring the “wonderful” Yorkshire countryside?
“Rolling hills run into spectacular limestone valleys, with historic castles and ancient abbeys offering something for the whole family,” shares Holiday at Home.
The travel website continued: “Centred around a bustling cobbled market square with a weekly Monday and Saturday market, Thirsk has a charm of its own.

Leyburn
The market town of Leyburn is also surrounded by numerous pretty villages including Middleham, Aysgarth, West Burton and Castle Bolton.
Gorgeous Cottages writes: “Within Leyburn’s market square you'll find a selection of cafes, bistros and restaurants along with art galleries and gift shops.
“Campbells of Leyburn is an independent supermarket and wine shop in the town that stocks locally sourced produce including rare breed meats and Yorkshire cheeses.”

Pickering
There are around 100 independent shops in Pickering including boutiques, chocolatiers and bookshops, according to Gorgeous Cottages.
The travel website adds: "Make sure to seek out The Hidden Market, an indoor flea market that’s filled to the brim with antiques, gifts, nearly new items and a range of quirky curios."
Pickering's main market day is on a Monday.
