REPAIR works to a major road in York are set to take even longer to complete than expected.

Following a crash on Sunday, September 1 near the B1222 at Naburn Lane, the A64 between the A19 and A1 junctions has been down to one lane at Middlethorpe.

Drivers had been warned that there were due to be delays until the road reopened at 8pm on Monday,  September 30.

But now National Highways say they have a confirmed date of Thursday, October 3 for repairs to start and they are expecting them to be completed with the lane reopened by the end of next week.

One of many frustrated drivers who have been in touch with The Press, and who didn't want to be named, said previously: “Commuting to work from Tadcaster to the Designer Outlet has become a nightmare."

Several others said they had been driven to writing to National Highways for an explanation.

National Highways issued further detail on the repairs, and explained the damage that the initial crash caused.

National Highways service manager, Mandy Foster, said: “One lane on the A64 has been closed for everyone’s safety while awaiting a bridge parapet repair, and we apologise for the delays caused.

“We now anticipate the new parapet sections will be ready to be installed from October 3. We are then scheduled to be on site over the following two nights to fix them into place.

"We currently expect the work to be completed and the lane reopened by the end of next week, depending on weather conditions.

“We would like to thank everybody for their continued patience during these works.
