The 26-year-old is head chef at Bosun’s Restaurant in York and has worked his way up in the culinary industry having taught himself how to cook food through watching YouTube videos.
After moving to London at 18, Kurtus enrolled at Gordon Ramsey’s restaurant, Maze, as chef de partie, before heading to the Michelin star restaurant Pétrus in Knightsbridge.
One of four awards to win on the night, Kutus’ accolade celebrates the dish that best represents the chef’s personal belief and was voted for online by the Fine Dining Lovers community.
Kurtus said: “Thank you so much to everyone who voted for me, this is a huge honour, and I’m delighted to walk away from this fantastic competition with an award in hand.
"I’m really proud of my signature dish. I put so much time and energy into finessing it to what it is over the past few months, so it’s gratifying to know that voters could see my personality and belief within it.”
Bosun's at Bishopthorpe in is owned and run by local couple, Kerrie and Phil Cook, who completed a full takeover of the site in December last year.
It's part of a leisure complex, formerly known as the Boatyard, now known as The Riverfront York, with the couple describing the venue as a complete ‘stay, play and dine destination’ for visitors.
The S.Pellegrino Young Chef Academy Awards are held every two years to champion and celebrate young chef talent throughout the world, encouraging them to bring their best to the table.
