A MAJOR shop in York was evacuated after an incident.
Several fire engines were at Marks & Spencer in Parliament Street with lights flashing at around 6pm tonight (Thursday, October 24).
The inside of the store was evacuated and customers were waiting outside.
Members of the M&S emergency team remained inside the shop.
Fire crews from West Yorkshire, North Yorkshire and Humberside Fire and Rescue Service were at the scene.
Shortly after 6pm an alarm sound could be heard from inside the building. Traffic passing the southern end of M&S was at a standstill.
But at around 6.40pm staff from M&S could be seen re-entering the shop and fire crews left the scene. The incident is believed to have been a false alarm after a fire alarm was activated.
