Comedian Dom Joly appeals  for 'cool things to do in York' in a Facebook post - and is swamped with replies, reports MAXINE GORDON

TOP comedian Dom Joly appealed on Facebook for 'cool' ideas ahead of his visit to York on Sunday and Monday - and was swamped with ideas.

Joly built a career from being a TV prankster and had a hit with his Channel 4 show Trigger Happy TV, which ran from 2000–2003.

He then hosted a spoof chat show on BBC 3, This is Dom Joly, and World Shut Your Mouth on BBC One, where again he used a hidden camera to prank folks.

Joly, 56, is currently on the road with his new show, The Conspiracy Tour, playing at The Stephen Joseph Theatre in Scarborough tonight.

He is having a mini-tour break in York on Sunday and Monday - although he is not playing a gig in the city - and appealed to his 174,000 followers on Facebook for "cool" ideas of what to do while in York.

His post reads: "I've got Sunday/Monday off in #York. Good cool bars, nice restaurants, things to do apart from the obvious please".

More than 320 comments had been posted under the appeal within hours of it being uploaded.

Many were helpful -suggesting places to visit in York that were off the beaten track.

Some were amusing - hopefully chiming with Joly's sense of fun (this was the man, after all who made a name for himself going round with a giant mobile phone in his hand, shouting at the top of his voice in quiet locations.)

One fan made reference to this is his reply to the comic: Peter Martini, former Press journalist who now runs speed-quiz events in York, wrote: "Come to the Brew York Sunday SpeedQuiz. You can play for free if you bring your massive phone. 7pm start."

Jonathon Williams pitched for a selfie: "I’d love a photo with you if I see you out and about. I’m there on Monday afternoon. If you want great food try Burgsy’s."

Dave Powell made it personal: "Come over to mine, I'll put the kettle on, you'll love it."

Other replies were more helpful and listed a wealth of pubs, cafes, restaurants, visitor attractions and tours for Joly to try.

Popular suggestions included a walk on the bar walls, a visit to the National Railway Museum and taking a ghost tour of York, to which Joly replied: "I don't do tours".

With York's booming restaurant, pub and cafe scene, the challenge for the comedian will be selecting from the many "cool" places suggested by fans. One thing's for sure - he won't be short of ideas.

If you see Dom out and about in York over Sunday and Monday, do try to get a selfie - use your mobile phone: the bigger, the better!
