York has seen a 155 per cent increase in new homes built year-on-year, according to analysis of ONS data by Paragon Bank’s Development Finance division.

The division's analysis counted 280 new homes completed in York in 2023/24 (to the year end of March 2024).

Sheffield came second after York in terms of year-on-year increases in homes built (out of all Yorkshire and the Humber local authorities), with an 80 per cent increase in new homes built year-on-year - although the absolute number of new homes built there was significantly higher than in York, at 1,080.

Across the whole of Yorkshire and the Humber, 13,260 new homes were built during the 2023/24 period, a 5.3 per cent decrease compared to the previous year.

The local authorities with the highest absolute number of homes built in the region during the 2023/24 period were North Yorkshire (2,280), Leeds (2,200), and the East Riding of Yorkshire (1,840).

Karl Kent of Paragon said: "It's no surprise that York is at the top of the list of rapidly growing areas in this region; it continues to be a highly desirable city, offering everything from charming streets to lively nightlife."
