OUR photo takes us back more than 100 years to a part of York that is much changed.
The image, from the council's excellent Explore Archive, dates from 1906 and shows the exercise area belonging to the horse depository which once stood at Tanner's Moat.
This area in the photo later became the Memorial Gardens.
The building at the top left of the picture is the headquarters of the North Eastern Railway Company.
It was designed by William Bell and Horace Field, and believed to have won a silver medal at an exhibition in Paris in 1904. It was decided that only the best materials should be used.
Building work began in 1900 and the cost was £100,000.
The building is large and grand in Queen Anne style with balconies, balustrades, Dutch gables and urns and vases adorning its exterior.
It is now The Grand, York's only five-star hotel.
