Recognise this York shop - it looks different today!

THIS photograph of George Mason's grocers shop in Fossgate is believed to date from the1930s.

The photo shows staff and the shop front with advertising signs for tea, cocoa and butter.

According to council records the building was a house and shop, dating from the late 17th century. The building was remodelled around 1720 and a new shop front added in the 19th century.

The building was altered again around 1928 for Mason's grocers.

Kelly's Directory of 1901 lists a J Parkes at the address, with occupations noted as "china and glass dealer" and "ironmonger".

In the 1970s it was the Sylvia Styles shop.

Today, the building is a restaurant - Marzano. Previously it was Mason's Bistro.

Soon it will have a new lease of life again because Marzano is moving to larger premises just down the road at the former Loch Fyne restaurant in the old FR Stubbs building at Fossbridge House.
