Today is the first day of extra help for disabled people at York’s Christmas Market.
Shopmobility York is extending its usual Mondays to Saturdays service to cover Sundays throughout the festive shopping centrepiece.
Its staff are volunteering their time on Sundays because City of York Council has restricted blue badge access to the city centre during the market for safety reasons.
Councillors had initially decided on a complete ban but changed it to allow access via a single entry point after 5pm last week.

Shopmobility is based on the top floor of Piccadilly Car Park and offers low-cost hire of mobility scooters, powerchairs and wheelchairs. Its customers benefit from free parking, an accessible toilet and easy access via a lift to Fenwick and the Coppergate Centre.
As well as extending its working hours, Shopmobility is offering all customers a 10 per cent discount off the hire of its mobility aids until the last day of the market on December 22.
Shopmobility York manager Jo Ellis said: “This year we will be especially valuable for those wanting to visit the Christmas Market.”
