Weather forecasters have given more details about the snow and ice expected to affect North Yorkshire early this week.

For the first time, the Met Office has extended its yellow warning to cover York, Selby and land south of the Humber Estuary.  It already covered the rest of North Yorkshire.

It also says commuters may face icy conditions for the Tuesday rush hour and school run.

Snow has already started to fall on higher land in northern Scotland and the Met Office is warning of freezing temperatures in York and North Yorkshire tonight.

The yellow warning, originally set to start at 10am tomorrow, now begins at 7pm tomorrow.

The Met Office says:” A period of rain, sleet and snow will occur during Monday evening, overnight into Tuesday morning.

“The most likely scenario is for most of the snow to accumulate on hills, with five to 10 cm possible above 200 metres and perhaps as much as 15 to 20 cm above 300 metres. There is a small chance of snow settling at lower levels, where 5 to 10 cm would prove much more disruptive, but this remains very uncertain.

“As rain, sleet and snow clear on Tuesday morning, ice may form on untreated surfaces.”

The yellow warning runs until 10am on Tuesday.
