Politicians in York have shared their tributes to the late deputy prime minister, John Prescott.

Lord Prescott's family revealed this morning (November 21) that he had passed away from Alzheimer's.

The Press shared a tribute from former York Central Labour MP - Hugh Bayley - who worked alongside John Prescott for nearly two decades.

Joining the tributes have been York's two MPs, and the Mayor of York and North Yorkshire.

Sharing a photo of when a young Luke Charters, York Outer MP, first crossed paths with John Prescott, he said: "Here was John Prescott at one of the first Labour conferences I went to back in 2012. He was truly a force to be reckoned with and he electrified any room. RIP."

"On a personal note, I recall John as an encourager, when I was a shadow minister, with words of wisdom and incredible insight.

"Prior to my time in Westminster, as a senior trade union official during the last Labour Government, he would work closely with us to ensure that workers always had a voice. Of course we didn't always get our way, buy he always wanted to go further too."

David Skaith, the Mayor for York and North Yorkshire said he was "saddened to hear the news" of John Prescott's passing. He described him as a "truly hardworking politician who did so much for the people of this country", adding that he will be missed.
