Norton on Derwent town council is looking for ‘local heroes’ in its newly launched Norton Community Awards.

Di Keal, Mayor of Norton on Derwent, said: “The town council wants to recognise the many wonderful charities and volunteers who work in Norton-based organisations, along with individuals in our community who quietly support others.

“We also want to see Norton looking its best for the festive season, so have added an award for the best dressed Christmas shop window.

“We have new Christmas lights being installed this year, so hope to make the town look extra special.”

The awards fall into four categories: 1. Norton-based Volunteer of the Year - an individual who goes ‘over and above’ in their role as a volunteer and in the contribution they make to the organisation they support in our community.

2. Norton based Charity of the Year - a charity based in Norton that makes a significant and important difference to individuals/groups in our community.

3. Norton-based Unsung Hero of the Year - an individual who contributes to the life of others in Norton in a quiet way, such as someone who does shopping for others who are ill or works ‘behind the scenes’ to contribute/support others.

4. Best Christmas display in Norton business window - a business in Norton that creates the best festive window over the Christmas period (businesses in Norton to nominate themselves - the judges will visit the entrants in late December).

Di added: “Winners in each category will be invited to a presentation event in the new year to receive their award and recognise the work that they do in the town.

“We know that there are some amazing volunteers and organisations out there and the town council wants to thank them for all they do to support others.

“It would also be brilliant if local businesses got behind our Best Dressed Window award and make Norton look really bright and festive this year - any shop and business can enter as long as they are in town.”

Anyone who would like to make a nomination can download an application form from the town council website and return the completed form to clerk@norton-on-derwent-tc.gov.uk or collect a paper copy from the town council offices on Commercial Street, Norton (The Old Courthouse, 84b Commercial Street, YO17 9ES) .

The closing date for entries is Friday December 6.
