A man caught carrying a garotte wire that could be used to strangle someone was among defendants sentenced recently at York Magistrates' Court.
Edward Ackford, 28, of no fixed address, was jailed for eight weeks after he admitted carrying garotte wire designed for strangulation on a Sunderland to York train. He was ordered to pay £85 prosecution costs and a £154 statutory surcharge.
In unconnected cases:
Lewis Oakland, 28, of Cecilia Place, off Holgate Road, pleaded guilty to stealing work tools from a car and was jailed for 16 weeks. He must pay a £154 statutory surcharge.
Matthew Dodson, 50, of Sirocco Court, Heworth, was jailed for two weeks after he admitted assaulting a police emergency worker. He must pay the victim £150 compensation.
Richard Jones, 36, of Parliament Street, Norton, pleaded guilty to cannabis driving in Norton and was disqualified from driving for three years. He was also fined £250 and ordered to pay £85 prosecution costs and a £100 statutory surcharge.
Liam Dawson, 19, of Glen Close, Melbourne, East Yorkshire, pleaded guilty to using threatening words or behaviour towards a man in York and criminal damage to a car in Bishophill. He was given a 12-month community order with 40 hours’ unpaid work. He must pay £150 compensation and a £114 statutory surcharge.
