A bid to increase the sentence of a driver who caused a fatal crash and then lied about having motor insurance has failed.

Cameron Guy Ward, 30, was uninsured when his Ford Fiesta crashed into Greg Newcombe’s Harley Davidson motorbike, York Crown Court heard last month.

But as the rider lay fatally injured on the ground, Ward went online using his phone, arranged insurance and later made a claim on it by lying that the crash had happened later than it did.

Ward, of Oak Drive, Sowerby near Thirsk, pleaded guilty to causing death by careless driving, causing death by uninsured driving and perverting the course of justice. He was jailed for 10 months and banned from driving for 23 months.

Following the hearing at York Crown Court last month, his case was referred to the Attorney General, who can take cases to the Court of Appeal if he believes the sentence imposed was too light.

But after lawyers in the law officer’s department considered Ward’s case, the Attorney General decided not to take any action over it.

Any member of the public can ask the Attorney General to consider asking for the Court of Appeal to change a sentence for certain offences.
