Schoen Clinic York has opened a new dementia service.

Wellen Court aims to provide specialised dementia care in York, with respite, and short- and long-term residential care, offered to those living with young onset through to advanced cases.

As of June 2024, 487,432 people in England had a dementia diagnosis - up from 77,112 in June 2023.

The figure represents a record high, according to the NHS, with further information, published by that body in July, available at https://www.england.nhs.uk/2024/07/dementia-diagnoses-in-england-at-record-high/

Adam Bloor, Schoen Clinic UK group clinical director, said: "Our new service represents a significant step forward in dementia care for York.

"We're addressing a crucial gap in local services, ensuring patients and their families no longer need to travel long distances for specialised care.

"Our person-centred approach, combined with our dementia-friendly environment, will help maintain independence and dignity for our patients while providing much-needed support for them and their loved ones."

A spokesperson for Schoen Clinic added: "Schoen Clinic encourages individuals to reach out to their GP or healthcare team if they know someone who needs support or if they notice common early symptoms of dementia, such as memory loss, repetitive speech, or confusion about time and place."

Services at Wellen Court will include occupational therapy and behavioural support plans, while a 'holistic approach,' in which life skills, movement, and activities will all be encouraged, is also described.

'Proactive engagement' with dementia charities was also mentioned by a spokesperson for Wellen Court.
