The York Business Festival scored with a popular event looking at the Business of Football.
The Tuesday night event at York St John University featured James Mason, the former BBC sports presenter and Bradford City AFC Chief Operating Officer, plus Colin Gordon, a former professional footballer and sports agent.
Organised by the West and North Yorkshire Chamber of Commerce, the event was chaired by Sarah Czarnecki, president of the chamber, who also hosted a Q&A.
Sarah said afterwards: “Colin Gordon and James Mason provided invaluable insights about how the sport has changed and their own personal experiences within the sport as player, agent, club owner and chief executive respectively.

“They were able to outline to the audience that football in the UK is more than just a sport; it is a thriving and significant business sector which blends passion and profit.”
Other events on Tuesday included events looking at business plans, with HSBC bank, a look at maternity leave issues, and how the university can help businesses with its law clinic, business clinic and how its students are available for internships and work experience.
The university’s interim dean of York Business School, Dr Brendan Paddison, said: “Our Tap into Talent event was a great opportunity for us to showcase the range of support we offer to businesses and our local community.
“Whether that’s through CPD courses, degree apprenticeship programmes, research and consultancy, or working with our students through placements and work experience, York St John University provides a range of services to help support business growth and development.
In addition, the York Press, who organised the festival in partnership with York St John also gave a masterclass in marketing, featuring commercial director Steve Lowe and colleague Kelly Sowerby.
Steve said the 60-minute sell-out event was enjoyed by 40 guests who learnt about building awareness, getting found out online and driving their business forward.
He said: “It was great to see local business owners coming along to find out more and hopefully we provided a few insights to help local business owners market their business.
“A big part of our session was around the importance of having a website that was fit for purpose, but also one that ranked highly on search engines such and Google and Bing.
“At LOCALiQ, the digital marketing arm of The York Press we have recently won the 2024 SEO agency of the year award at the UK agency awards, so our attendees were in good hands and hopefully in just 60 minutes they got something they can implement in their business.”
