THE county's first elected mayor is set to switch on the Christmas lights in a North Yorkshire Yorkshire village this weekend.
Mayor of York and North Yorkshire David Skaith has been invited to Burn Methodist Chapel Christmas Tree Festival before switching on the festive decorations.
He'll then go on to switch on the Christmas lights in Burn village, just south of Selby on Saturday November 30.
The tree festival, open from 1- 4.30pm, showcases themed trees decorated by village residents – and various games, activities and refreshments will be available.
Paula Marie, the Vintage Vocalist, will entertain with a selection of Christmas carols and popular songs in the chapel from 3pm and will then join the Mayor at the village war memorials opposite the Wheatsheaf pub to switch on the lights at 4.45pm approximately.
Mr Skaith joins a gallery of famous media faces and ‘local heroes’ who have switched on Burn’s lights and follows Selby’s MP Keir Mather who officiated in 2023.
Previous VIPs have included Coronation Street actress Jean Alexander who played Hilda Ogden, BBC presenter Harry Gration, YTV Calendar’s Christine Talbot and Jon Hill, York’s favourite panto dame Berwick Kaler, Selby Rock Choir, the Yorkshire Rows transatlantic race team, log-serving local ‘postie’ Myles Boothman and representatives of the region’s ambulance, fire and police services.
