STEP back in time to York in the early 1900s.

This image, taken more than a century ago, shows some children playing near Monk Bridge at the bottom of Huntington Road. The bridge over the River Foss carried the road to Heworth and Scarborough.

A horse and carriage is passing the gas works which can be seen in the background. The building above the bridge on the left was, at one time, the Woodsman Inn.

The photo comes from Explore York Libraries and Archives. For more old photos of York, do visit its website (images.exploreyork.org.uk).
