A drop-in event will be held in York to tell people affected by Parkinson’s about the support available to them in the area.

Volunteers from the Parkinson’s UK charity will be at the Spurriergate Centre from 11am to 3pm on Thursday (December 5).

Parkinson's is a condition in which parts of the brain become progressively damaged over many years.

Thursday's event in Spurriergate is part of York Disability Week which raises awareness of the rights of disabled people and situations in all aspects of political, social, economic and cultural life.

Lorna Edmondson, chair of the York Parkinson's group which was set up 45 years ago, said the drop-in event is open to all.

“If you are affected by Parkinson's please drop in for a cuppa and a chat,” Lorna said.

“We will have all the latest Parkinson's literature on display and it will be a great opportunity to talk with others who are travelling the same road.

“And we know how important it is to also support partners, carers and family of those who have Parkinson's so everybody is welcome.”

Issy Sanderson who leads an art group for people affected by Parkinson’s will also be there on the day.

“One thing we know for sure about Parkinson's is the importance of keeping active and trying new things, so I will be there to organise some Christmas themed creative activities and we will also be trying our hand at table tennis,” Issy said.

“So, do join us and find out more about how you can continue to live well with Parkinson’s.”
