City of York Council is thanking businesses and residents across the city who have already contributed Christmas gifts for children in need and young care leavers in York.
The council says the festive season can be a difficult one for many children and young people, particularly those who have had a challenging start in life and who live alone or have few family connections.
The authority says it is particularly grateful to businesses who have helped provide items for Christmas gift bags and gifts for care leavers, including Flying Tiger, York Mix, York FC, Potions Group, reCycle York and Tesco at Clifton Moor.
York residents can also help support children and young people in need over the festive period by donating gifts at two drop-off points across the city: The Cross Keys, 32 Tadcaster Road, Dringhouses, York, YO24 1LQ and LNER Community Stadium Monks Cross Drive ,Huntington, York, YO32 9AF by Friday 6 December.
Items needed include new hat, scarf and gloves sets, toiletry gift sets, gift cards, chocolate/ sweet treats and fluffy blankets, plus children’s books, creative activities and toys (for care leavers with little ones).
Martin Kelly OBE, the council’s corporate director for Children and Education, said: “York residents and businesses have always been fantastic supporters of children and young people across the city.
"We know that the festive period can be a challenging time for many, especially those who don’t have family or friends around them. Ensuring all our young people receive a gift and support this December is a great way to remind them that people care.
“We’re immensely grateful to all those who have already offered their help this year, including providing gifts, experiences and offers of ongoing help.
"This sort of support really can help to change people’s lives for the better. I’d urge other businesses to get in touch if they can provide any additional support.”
