Thurs 19 April 07, The Voyager Concert Choir of Tucson, Arizona, sang their hearts out to a full audience of over 60s at St Sampson’s, accompanied by Norma Harmer on the piano and ably directed by Daryl Wonderly. The mixed sex group, over the age of 55 and numbering about 40, are giving 5 concerts in England between April 12 - 23. Ours was the fourth, following Cardiff, Stratford and York Minster. The last is been given at St Anne’s Lutheran Church in London 22 April.

They are residents of a Resort Park where there are many facilities for different activities and classes and mainly occupied by retired people. The Voyager Chapel conducts weekly nondenominational services with attendances of 600+ in winter. This group are drawn from the Chapel Choir and originate from all over the USA and Canada.

The program started with “The Love of God” and “ Be Still My soul.” The middle pieces were well known popular and folk; “Oh, Susanna”, “Shenandoah”, Beautiful Dreamer” and “Coming Round The Mountain” and it closed with “The Lord Loves A Laughing Man” (I agree) and “God Be With You”.

I spoke to an 81 year old gent singer who was here during the war and there were others, he said. I didn’t ask but wondered if there might have been old lights rekindled.

It was a really uplifting and enjoyable performance, applauded by all and acknowledged by Malcolm Whittaker our centre manager.
