The nation at a standstill, brought down by union strikes, when we gave a Grantham grocer’s daughter the job of sorting it out. She swung her handbag and that did it. In the process, her pals asset stripped much of our industry, sold off public utilities and services then jumped on the boards of the new private companies which took over for peanuts. Experienced people were sacked and profit took over from life long dedication to public service. Labour were powerless to stop her for ten years until she went too far with the poll tax and we threw her out. Labour walked in unopposed. No other option!
Her legacy: a seriously weak Tory party incapable of anything beyond pitiful cat calling, at a safe distance, from across the floor, in competition with even weaker Lib Dems. The grocer’s jolly little grand daughter took over as guru for our affairs at the BBC. More posh than the royals.
In walked the Edinburgh, Tory solicitor’s smiling son, the natural heir of the grocer’s daughter. He promised to reform seriously disabled Labour, did so and established himself as New Labour leader with the help of his close friend, a tricky money man, and a rough and tumble tyke, later known as 2 Jags. The money man handed over the banks to their bosses, the banks made money and the money man gayly picked the pockets of the lower ranks for the benefit of the new alliance, Labour and money. A little Lord, whose pals know where to put their money for the best returns, was taken on board and the money man’s coffers swelled further.
The rich got richer and the poor got poorer and nobody cared enough to change that, while more than enough to do it was wasted. Essential life enhancing services and community facilities suffered and dedicated people lost heart.
The solicitors son, a Christian, looked abroad to establish his position as a world leader and was welcomed by the radical Christian leader of our powerful long established ally, who had decided to go to war against radical Muslims. Together, they went on the attack while other world leaders held back to find more peaceful solutions. The divisions grew, the world was more dangerous and our system kept the solicitors son in power until he decided to hand his power to the money man, in appreciation of his valuable help without so much as a by your leave.
Do we keep the same system for the next 20 years or would consensus government serve us better, giving more balanced, joined up policies with greater continuity and everybody feeling responsible?
I can understand Labour and Tories wanting to stay the same, but not why we let them.
