For years, I was selling and paid on results. I was proud that I could always go back after a sale with confidence. Recruiting as a manager, it was very important, in building a reliable, successful team, that I got the right people on board to work with. I built a successful team with the lowest staff turnover in the company. Where high earnings can be earned, sharp salesmen are about, but we were selling well established and trusted, world wide quality products, so it was most important they didn’t get in.
Recruiting, I wanted to know as much as possible about the person and their previous experience. They were asked to complete a character profiling questionnaire which was sent by fax to head office personel for assessment with the findings returned within half an hour.
I made a point, in their presence, of phoning their previous employers before the one they currently had. This sorted out a few doubtful ones, but looking for some sort of achievement, preferably in selling, and judging the person in front of me allowed me to make a decision and build success with them. Expenses for attending were paid.
We hear of crooks in security firms, doctors without qualifications, Known pedophiles working with children and obviously unsuitable people in the wrong job, or untrained for it.
The people who recruit them are not capable of the job they are doing. How do they get them? They seem to excel at choosing duds.
I felt I had failed anyone who left us, and their colleagues too, unless it was to better them selves.
