The Olympic flag will be flying over the city tomorrow as part of national celebrations.

At 4pm, the flag will be raised at the Mansion House, to mark the official handing over of the Olympic Flag from Beijing to London. Similar flag events are being held across the country.

York’s celebrations will start with the traditional Chinese lion dance outside the Mansion House, an ancient Far Eastern ritual performed to bring good fortune. The Olympic Flag will then be handed over to the Sheriff of York, David Wilde, and Ali Gane, chairman of Active York.

Throughout the day, residents of York can also celebrate for free at York’s sports facilities. Edmund Wilson and Yearsley Swimming Pools will be open for free swimming, from 8am to 9pm, and Oaklands will also be offering selected sports for free from 9am to 3pm.
