A DISPLAY of art work done by the children of strife-torn Gaza has been put on display in York Minster.
The pictures are part of a peace campaign, led by John Bibby, against the killing of civilians, including children, during the current Israeli military operation in Gaza.
Mr Bibby’s protest, now on its seventh day, is in the form of a hunger strike; he fasts one hour for every child killed.
The art work consists of bright pictures and embroidery, of houses, trees, plants and animals. Three pictures also contain poems written in Arabic. All of the art is interwoven, giving it the impression of a patchwork quilt.
Talking about the art work, Mr Bibby said: “It has sparked a lot of interest and has enhanced the display at the vigil.”
York’s International Service, based on Goodramgate, is responsible for bringing the pictures from Gaza to the UK. The service works in partnership with grassroots organisations in Latin America, West Africa and the Middle East to alleviate poverty.
International service worker Ross Georgeson is an arts educator working with Gaza children affected by the war.
During his visits to Gaza he worked with after-school clubs in refugee camps and organised arts summer camps. His aim is to use art as a form of therapy for children traumatised by war.
