ONE of the stars of top TV soap Coronation Street has suffered a broken jaw during an attack in a North Yorkshire town which is now being probed by police.
Mikey North, who plays cocky Weatherfield bad boy Gary Windass, needed emergency surgery following the incident in his Scarborough hometown in the early hours of Sunday.
The 22-year-old – one of the most recent additions to the ITV soap’s cast – is believed to have been caught up in trouble as he walked home from a club in the town after a night out with his girlfriend and a group of friends. Police have since arrested a teenager as their investigation into the attack continues.
A spokesman for Coronation Street said: “There was an incident at the weekend which resulted in Mikey North sustaining facial injuries.
“He was treated in hospital and the matter is now in the hands of the police.”
The actor’s condition is now being monitored by the soap’s bosses, and some reports have claimed that scenes which he was due to film this week have had to be rescheduled following his injuries.
A spokesman for North Yorkshire Police said: “We can confirm we were informed of an incident which occurred in the early hours of Sunday, April 12, in Scarborough.
“As a result of the incident, a 22-year-old male was taken to a local hospital with a serious facial injury. A 19-year-old male has been arrested in connection with the incident and he has been released on police bail while police enquiries continue.”
The actor, who is originally from Cayton but now lives in Manchester, studied at Pindar School in Scarborough – now the George Pindar Community Sports College – and Scarborough Sixth Form College before joining the Coronation Street ranks last year, having also appeared in The Bill, The Royal, Waterloo Road and Britannia High.
His hot-headed Corrie character has since been at the centre of several major storylines, including being cleared of assaulting love rival David Platt, played by Jack P Shepherd, and becoming involved in an ongoing feud between his screen family and their neighbours, as well as being nominated for Villain of the Year at the British Soap Awards.
