Jackie Mathers

As founding dean of York St John Business School her brief is to “promote knowledge exchange and business partnerships”.

That means managing a staff of 50, the learning achievements of 2,000 students, and helping the aspirations of business leaders across the region.

But it is merely an extension of her lifelong learning process, that began as a laboratory assistant for the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food, then as a sales rep for Page Feeds Ltd and later as an area manager for commercial finance house UFB Humberclyde.

Meanwhile, she was gleaning her higher education qualifications, gaining her MBA at the University of Leeds and later her doctorate in business administration at the University of Bath (where she is currently studying international higher education management).

Eventually she was to become senior lecturer for higher education at Askham Bryan Agricultural College and for two years, until July 2003, was at York St John as principal lecturer in quality management, enhancement and staff development.

Then Jackie became head of the college’s school of management, community and communication before being asked to launch the York St John Business School for what was now the York St John University.

Rugby union is her passion. She manages the under-13s at Clifton Park, where her son, Ben, plays. You will find her at most England international matches and she describes herself as “Leeds Carnegies’ biggest supporter”.

Which job (other than your own) would you like to have and why?

Rugby Director at Leeds Carnegie – dream job.

Greatest achievement?

Having my wonderful son, Ben.

What makes you most angry?

Marginalisation of individuals and groups.

What makes you laugh?

Satirical humour or a good night out with the girls.

What fools do you suffer least?

People who place obstacles in the way for no good reason.

Whom do you most admire and why?

I admire the work of many; one single individual hasn’t yet presented him/herself to me.

What do you need to make life complete?

Financial security into retirement, as apparently my generation will live beyond 100.

How do you relax?

Supporting my son play rugby union for York and following Leeds Carnegie RUFC.

Why do you make a difference?

Taking an approachable view while being mindful of individuals’ positions and values.

Name the organisation (apart from your own!) that you see as closest to perfection and why

Leeds Carnegie rugby… or, on a serious note, the economic downturn has thrown many seemingly perfect companies into a downward spiral, presenting many social and economic problems. Therefore I would support anyone entrepreneurial wishing to have a go in the current climate.

Favourite holiday destination?

Les Gets in France for skiing.
