The Grange Hotel in York has been named in The Sunday Times Travel Magazine’s Top 100 Hotels in the World.
The hotel, a finalist in the Tourism & Hospitality Business Of The Year category of The Press Business Awards 2009, is listed with the likes of The Connaught in London, the Post Ranch Inn in California, and the Hermitage Bay, Antigua.
The building began life as an elegant classic Grade II country house in Bootham, Clifton, built in the 1830s. It was bought by Jeremy and Vivien Cassel in 1989, at which time the building was virtually derelict, and converted into a luxury hotel, opening for business in 1990.
It now has an AA four-star rating and AA Rosettes for its Ivy Brasserie.
Throughout the hotel are antique oil paintings, period piece furnishings, rich drapes, deep comfy sofas and roaring fireplaces. All 36 bedrooms are individually furnished and designed. Six new bedrooms have separate walk-in showers and waterproof 17-in LCD televisions at the foot of double ended baths.
In April’s Visit York Awards the hotel won the Outstanding Customer Service and was highly commended in the Eating Place Of The Year category.
Adrienne Dyson, sales and marketing manager of The Grange, said: “It is testimony to the hard work and dedication of everyone at the hotel. We and all our guests have always known that we were world class.”
